During the school year, different approaches on teaching practise and on repetition's method with pupils to work on several activities, have led to unexpectedly succeded results.

Scratch
The Roman Empire
Introduction
The first section of the book History of 5th grade covers the period of Roman rule in Greece and the large spread of the Roman Empire at the limits of the known world. An expansion that had include in the territory of the Roman Empire the whole Mediterranean Sea which the Romans called it proudly "Mare Nostrum" - our sea. This growth, unsurprisingly, created various problems. These problems are presented in the following game with the help of the freeware program Scratch.
Description
Students play a game where they help a Roman merchant to travel across the Mediterranean and to exchange goods at five major ports of the season, starting from Ostia. Then stop at the first port of their journey Carthage - Phoenicia. There they learn some historical facts while playing and continue to the second stop at Marseille - France, after that they continue to Barcelona - Spain, Alexandria - Egypt and finally they arrive in Athens where they get off the ship to visit the Acropolis. Finally they return in Rome where, if everything went well and they made good deals , return with a larger ship. On their trip they talk in different languages, they learn the history of the places, they make conversions from local currencies into Roman coins and they have troubles with pirates. At the end of the game pupils create their own small application with Scratch.
This activity is a Game Based-Learning group activity and aims at developing Intrapersonal intelligence but can develope and other types of intelligences, such as:

The program Scratch* an account for Scratch site so as to upload the game, a PC and a projector (or a smartboard if there is any) .

Duration: 3 hours
Teacher have to prepare the game, after that , 1 hour for pupils to play the game, 1 hour for the program presentation and for pupils to create their own application(to play with the program) and 1 hour for the relative chapter to be analyzed and the necessary feedback.
Targets
For students to :

Ascertain the difficulties that existed in the administration of such a large territory to that era.

Suggest ways to minimize these problems.

Learn through historical data about the life and the problems of the people who lived into that era.

Recall the history they have been taught in the previous school year.

Gain familiarity with computers.

Come into contact with a simple visualized programming language forming an own small application.

Work in groups.

Convert a history lesson to interdisciplinary activity ( history, maths, social education,geography)

To familiarize pupils with a visualized programming language.
Development pathway
Step 1: The teacher prepare the Scratch game.
Step 2: Presentation of the the game and its rules to the pupils.
Step 3: Pupils play the game in groups because time is ticking.
Step 4: Game's feedback, analyzing the gameplay and heroes' roles, description of financial , social , language , transportation and ruling a such territory troubles and problems.
Step 5: Course presentation of the book and comparisons with the game.
Step 6: Presentation of scratch - instructions for some of the features and development of a small application from students.
